STUDIES

This space is a repository for concepts, fledgling ideas, visual studies, and the like. Some of which may later develop into more complete projects, most will only see daylight here. With the creation of machine learning tools, it has become increasingly easy to explore these concepts through imagery. Not everything found here is A.I. generated, but the speed and ease of these tools allows for the creation of complex visuals near instantly. These images are never a perfect match for the pure idea, they are limited by language, however in their inaccuracies countless compelling moments can be found.

This only represents a small selection of the concepts explored. To see much more you can visit the WROT Instagram profile.

Exposed

2023 | Minimalist structures with exposed infrastructure

Simple architectural forms that fail to contain their building systems. The conflicting visuals of sterile architectural boundaries unable to contain critical elements to their function conjures a aesthetic response that feels foreign yet satisfying.

Fibrous Cells

2023 | Micro strand construction

Through the build-up of strands and layers, both depth and void emerge. Below is a series of spatial studies of amalgamated membranes. The loose and chaotic nature of these spaces are more akin to wondering through an uncharted cave than any familiar form of architecture.

Unfamiliar Infrastructure

2023 | A study in the appearance of purpose

The complex systems that power our cars and homes, bring water, and conditioned air into our spaces are all neatly tucked away behind panels and encased in walls. Easily forgotten until a failure brings them into focus. They are compelling for their complexity and individually coded design language, specific to each system.

Science fiction uses complex infrastructure to simultaneously bewilder and convince us to believe their narrative. An unfamiliar infrastructure begs to be understood.

Echo Chamber

2023 | Architecture from landscape

Teasing unique architectural volumes out of Midjourney by referencing landscape photography while prompting architectural language. The resulting image is then referenced in a new prompt accompanied by amended architectural language, and that process continues until a desired result is reached.

Furling the Residence

2023 | Textiles in architecture

A visual study of wrapped and bound residential buildings. Shifting the scale of knots and textiles to the built environment let’s us see all with fresh eyes.

Although never prompted, these images undoubtedly conjure the incredible works of Christo and Jeanne-Claude. I find these images both compelling for their beauty, accuracy, and striking sense of materiality, however I can’t help but be concerned for there ability to fabricate a new body of work for deceased artists.

Recursive Structures

2023 | Highly complex studies in form

Exploring Midjourney’s ability to create geometry through visuals that follow a scripted logic. I’m really impressed by the intricacies in form and the accuracy with lighting on all these studies.

To the Bone

2023 | Macro shots of wax sculptures

Testing machine learning’s ability to capture an unconventional subject matter in a hyper specific photographic style. The results are quite compelling and are an accurate representation of the intended technique.

Lard

2023 | Soft forms cast in solid mass

Sculpted through volume, ageless, and primitive. These retail facades are carved by an unfamiliar hand.
